Firefly
Here’s a little entry on something I like. I’m supposed to share such things so my readers will better appreciate me and my work. I don’t need a reason to be compelled to write about Firefly, however, for it’s the best damn show in the ‘verse.
Other than my wife’s name, I can’t think of anything more worthy of a tattoo than my favorite TV series. It’s a science fiction western which is appealing enough in itself, but more than Cowboys Versus Aliens or anything remotely similar in subgenre, Firefly hosts characters that are more interesting than any I’ve encountered in any other series.
Of all the characters in fiction and film, I would fly with Captain Reynolds. I would like to meet him, to serve on his ship, to be a member of his crew and go out on daring adventures. This is saying an awful lot, for otherwise, I am a die hard fan of Captain Jack Sparrow. Of course, there are a host of other characters I consider awesome and worthy of my adulation, but Mal is by far the front runner of them all.
I find Captain Mal Reynolds to be a potent hero with shortcomings that just make him all the better for having them. He’s got the best heart and the best motives, even though he may be a space pirate and thief. I cannot quite explain what makes him great without spoilers. His character is best played out in example, so go see for yourself. Don’t even rent it on streaming. Buy the whole series. Buy a lot of copies on physical media and gift them to your friends. Donate copies to shelters and schools.
My favorite quote from the series is from Captain Reynolds: "We've done the impossible, and that makes us mighty."
