Fredrik Jonsson’s Suncopia

Watch this on YouTube, kick on the transcript, make it full screen (on a wall-sized projector if you can).

I cannot get enough of Fredrik Jonsson’s work. I’m going to beg him for a piece to use for cover art on my next novel.

All Jonsson’s AI videos are captivating. I find the storytelling riveting and images so fresh I think they’re going to jump off the screen. I think I’m too new to the medium to talk intelligently about it, but I will add just this: generative AI sometimes hallucinates and fills in whatever “comes to mind” (more accurately, what is scraped and at-hand to fill in, likely). I know this artist must spend weeks assembling his video creations, but here’s a thing I’d note:

I actually like this new medium’s “not-quite-rights” now and then.

A face will morph, or strands of hair will become sticks, then vanish. A head will turn and we’ll see another face rendering on the side with a whole new expression that’s obviously from the same person. People will take on ‘random’ forms, losing a limb or growing several, again in dream-like transitions. I enjoy all that. It is like a trademark of the medium, maybe?

As I said, I’m too new to the medium and as yet have never touched the tools for AI video creation. I apologize now for my ignorance, and for those finding this post years from now, realize just how new to it all I am/was please, and forgive.
