A comic-con? …c’mon, really!

Yes, really!

This was our anniversary weekend, and my wife and I had the opportunity to do something very special and fun.

We attended a Comic-Con in Oklahoma City expressly to meet the cast of Psych!

We have been loyal fans of the television comedy/drama since it first aired on USA Network in 2006. We were able to attend a panel presentation, the live recording of a podcast episode, and meet Maggie Lawson, Timothy Omundson, Corbin Bernsen, Kurt Fuller, Kirsten Nelson, and Sage Brocklebank (only Dulle Hill and James Roday Rodriguez were not present).

It was fantastic (and a little daunting) to meet some luminaries like these people. I’ve shaken hands with presidents and celebrities before, but this was more personable (and their characters were ones I’ve adored for so very long!)

Further reflection: I think I’ve found my people.

Yep, I’ll own my inner nerd. I have testified to my love for sci-fi before here in this blog, and I’m going to become more forthright about it altogether. Fans of Roddenberry’s Star Trek vision will tell you that science fiction can embrace and highlight all the potential goodness of mankind (and other life forms, for that matter). The genre is one of promises and futurism that can be unblemished by our darker side.

Of course, some sub-genre of science fiction/fantasy go into supernatural perspectives and others yet explore the darker side of man’s core nature.

All of it’s represented at a Con.

Anything goes. All of fandom parades around (in costume, often) at such an event.

That’s what makes it so great. Everyone’s Inner Nerd is let out, off the leash. All of us who were bullied for being odd are here expected to be odd. There’s no judgment at a Con. It’s one of the most inclusive environments I could imagine.

I’m so enamored with this that I’m determined to write a piece of fiction worthy of Comic-Con participants.

What’s playing on my internal iPod right now?

I’m the One that’s Cool, a fitting nerd anthem!

Originally streaming on YouTube, The Guild was a series that followed the struggles of a group of gamers. The cast features Felicia Day, and she's the lead singer here, too.

Lyrics from the chorus, in case the video goes down:

To all the asshat jocks who beat me up in school
Now I'm the one that's cool
I'm the one that's cool
To all the prom queen bitches thinking they still rule
Now I'm the one that's cool
I'm the one that's cool
And to my eighth-grade crush who pushed me in the pool
Now I'm the one that's cool
I'm the one that's cool
You may be tan and fit and rich but you're a tool
And I'm the one that's cool
I'm the one that's cool

OKC’s Galaxycon was 3 day event with over 300 hours of total offerings, where fans soaked up nerdly goodness with celebrities, creators, voice actors, cosplayers, comic book artists, anime, entertainers, fan groups, gamers, panelists, wrestlers and more.
